Chris de Burgh - new record company is Ferryman Productions

FERRYMAN PRODUCTIONS - Unofficial Information page

Chris de Burgh - Ferryman Productions

Chris de Burgh is now a recording artist on his very own label - Ferryman Productions. For 30 years Chris was signed with A&M records who were then sold to various record companies at the time including the Polygram and Sony group.
Ferryman Productions launched in March 2004 with the release of the single 'The Words I Love You' closely followed by the album 'The Road To Freedom'.

Chris recently said in an interview to Man On The Line - "I'm absolutely thrilled that I now have my own record company Ferryman Productions. It sounds very grand, but our staff is fairly small, extremely hard working and putting long hours, in particular Caroline, Kenny and Loren, long hours of getting the whole idea started. Kenny Thomson in particular has been pursuing this idea for at least two years. We will be selling through outlets and through record companies who are the distributor of the new album. And it's basically a different marketing strategy."

THE ROAD TO FREEDOM
Does this make good business sense for CdeB or would he have been better off signing again for another big label? In a recent Radio 2 interview, Chris replied "It makes great business sense and artistic sense, it's a freedom and I think that the title - 'The Road To Freedom' does reflect that." "In fact I would have got a more restrictive contract with another big label, it would have been almost to what we had before.

We had almost as good as you can get within reason, even at the end of a long career. With your own product you can literally do what you want with it, this is a small example that we have made an industry first selling exclusively out of Woolworths and across our website.
And by doing that, it means if we want to sell out of the back of a truck, as Herp Albert did over in California with his Tijuana Brass we can. It means that we can go to other record labels around the World and cut a very hard deal."

As far as artistic expression is concerned, CdeB is grateful that his past record company always left him alone and never said things like 'You must record in this way or that way.'In an interview to 'The Getaway Gazette' Chris explained "I have this tremendous freedom now to do what I want -and always have, artistically -but, with my own product, my own records, I can do what I want. I do not -and neither does my manager, Kenny, for that matter -have to refer to an echelon of music business people, who will either show no interest or a bit of interest, or side-step the issue. It's quite often a nightmare dealing with record companies. In fact, there was a funny moment when I had just finished recording some songs for the new album with the orchestra and one of the orchestra leaders said 'That's gorgeous, what we've just done. I wonder what they'll think about it at the record company?' And I said 'Yes, I wonder. ..', and then I suddenly caught myself: 'Wait a second; we're the record company!'

In the UK, Ferryman Productions are limiting sales of the new CD 'The Road To Freedom' to the official website and exclusive store rights to Woolworths. As website sales do not contribute to chart rankings has CdeB given up caring about chart positions?
"I do care about chart positions," says Chris "but I have to be absolutely realistic about it. It's that people of my age and people who have been in the business as long as I struggle to make an impact on the charts. Although you have to remember that the charts reflect current sales, but not sales over a long period of time. And people like for example Mark Knopfler may not achieve chart success, but certainly can sell a lot of records across a year. Whereas a lot of people who tend to occupy the charts for a short time, only sell records for a short time."
