DAVID GILMOUR - On An Island

EMI Records
February 2006

After far too many years away, with the exception of Live 8 at which he performed with all of his original cohorts for the first time in twenty-five years, Dave Gilmour, founding father and mainstay of Pink Floyd, is back with a vengeance.

ON AN ISLAND front cover of the album by David Gilmour
DAVID GILMOUR - ON AN ISLAND

This, quite simply, is an album that makes you want to thank God for music, such is its beauty, craft, guile and uniqueness. A melodic mixture of Jazz, Blues and rough-edged Rock, On An Island has absolutely everything that a fan of Floyd's music - and of music in general - could wish for.

Beautifully layered and packed with surprises, it is Take A Breath, The Blue, Red Sky At Night and Where We Start that take the honours in a quadruplet of awe-inspiring perfection that shatters then brings together, the musical soul as one. Which is not to say that the remaining six tracks are slouches in any way whatsoever. Far from it, as Then I Close My Eyes testifies.

This is an album that is intensely uplifting in a world that is so often littered with schmatltzy dross - James Blunt, please take note - and should be on the very top of everybody's shopping list the next time they head off to ASDA for a loaf.

10/10
