Sometimes a book slips through the fingers, only to be saved by the gripping nature of its contents. Laura McHugh’s debut novel is one such novel that so nearly got away, but once it crossed the path of attention it was a certainty that this was a novel destined to be completed in one sitting.

People still whisper about Lucy Dane’s mother who vanished years ago from the town of Henbane, deep in the Ozark mountains. When one of Lucy’s friends is found murdered, Lucy feels haunted by the two lost women: by the mother she never knew, and the friend she couldn’t protect.

Yet her search for answers, in a place where secrets are easily concealed, leads her to a chilling discovery and, with this revelation, she must grapple with the meaning of family, the secrets we keep, and the lengths we will go to protect the ones we love.

Set from the two perspectives of the lost mother and surviving daughter, The Weight of Blood is cunningly designed yet free-flowing tale of love, loss and redemption that will have the likes of Gillian Flynn looking over their shoulders, inasmuch as the daring nature of the construct is not only unusual but also adds to the dynamic of the work and instils strength into the plot line that makes it even more compelling.

Of course, there are two major elements that every story needs; strong characters and a plausible plotline. The Weight of Blood more than adequately ticks both of these boxes, with the misunderstood Lucy forming the engine that drives proceedings along, with Lucy firmly behind the wheel guiding the reader at relentless pace towards the conclusion.

The Weight of Blood is a marvellous debut novel from somebody whose work clearly deserves to taken note of.
