Bat the Symphony

Liverpool Empire Theatre

Sunday 12th April 2009

If you are looking for a relaxing night out listening to a 40 piece orchestra perform an orchestral version of some of Meatloaf’s classic songs – then this is not the show for you! However, if you want to see one of the best tribute Meat tribute performers around (Steve Steinman) and enjoy an energetic rock extravaganza, then this is the show for you. Fresh on the heels of his other tributes – The Meatloaf Story and The Trilogy – Steinman takes it to another level accompanied not only by his extremely talented band but by the National Orchestra of Great Britain.

Bat the Symphony live in concert

From the moment the first guitar rip was heard, and the silhouettes appeared behind the white curtain, it was obvious we were in for a treat of rock music at its best. All the classics were there, ‘Paradise By Dashboard Light’ was performed with a superb tongue in cheek attitude that Meatloaf himself could learn from and ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ obviously had us all up out of our seats. One slightly sour note was the rather abrupt ending, it wasn’t obvious that they had finished the set and the audience were left waiting for more when the lights came on!

The other disappointment of the night was the rather small crowd, but putting on this type of event on an Easter Sunday was always going to be a bit dodgy. Steinman blamed the fact that Easter moves each year, not an excuse as you only need to go online to find out the dates!! Nevertheless a good night was had by all and Steinman, to his credit, does not pretend to be Meatloaf, he does though put in the kind of performance that Meatloaf would be proud of. He is ably supported by his two attractive backing singers, and in particular Emily Clarke, whose rendition of ‘It’s All Coming Back To Me Now’ left the hairs on the back of many a neck standing up! Truly a talented young lady.
