With a set reminiscent of a huge picture book and costumes that have stepped straight from an artist’s easel, Cinderella is a joy from start to finish and for a theatre intent on building a reputation for theatrical performance over the coming years, this year’s pantomime has done nothing but good.

Lynne Fitzgerald and Danny O’Brien, straight from their recent success in The Salon, effortlessly adopt the very different roles of rough-tough Fairy Godmother and an affable Buttons to bring a presence that fills the stage, whereas Shaun Mason and Chris Crookhill’s Ugly Sisters, Hannah and Montana, work hard at being mean but brilliantly bring the house down laughing – and themselves –in the process. Richard De Vere’s Dandini is more street thug than panto baddie, but his ceaseless energy keeps things rolling. Chantelle Joseph is an enchanting Cinders, though her crystal clear singing deserves as much acclaim as her acting. Finally Marc Lawlor’s Prince and Kev Seed’s Andy Pandy, during a scene change, are both simply charming.

With the addition of Schnorbitz and a delightfully cute Schnookie – a Yorkshire terrier – The Theatre Royal St Helens has once again pulled out all the stops to provide first class family entertainment that can rival any of its rivals.
